Preparing your Home for Sale
You've lived in your home for years and that creaky step, your cluttered desk and lots of family photos on the wall are all part of the charm. A potential buyer may not see it that way. Buyers will look at your house with a critical eye, so to be prepared you will need to get your home is top shape. If your home has any major issues such as an outdated electrical system or a soon to be leaking roof, you will want to get those fixed before you put your home on the market. All homeowners though will need to make small changes to make their house more saleable. This means removing clutter, de-personalizing, and making sure that basic maintenance has been kept up to date. Here is a checklist to get you started:
- Fix leaky faucets
- Replace furnace filters
- Replace burnt out light bulbs
- Clear off all surfaces except for a few neutral decorative items
- Clean appliances inside and out
- Organize closets and cupboards
- Sweep walkways, porches and patios
- Clean and polish doorknobs
- Pack away family photos and personal items
- Dust all surfaces and fixtures
- Organize your garage
- Clean gutters and downspouts
- Replace smoke alarm batteries
- Buy attractive place settings for your table and if needed, new comforters for your bed
- Organize and de-clutter any “problem areas”
- Clean entry doors
