Moving Tips and Advice
Anyone who has been through a move has lots of advice to give. Here are some of the best moving and relocating tips we've heard yet:
- Schedule your moving to-do's on the calendar you use the most. The more visible, the better.
- Start a file with all of your relocation papers, checklists, receipts and important phone numbers and keep it in an easily accessible place.
- Begin cleaning out drawers and closets as soon as possible. Pack up anything you won't need between now and your move to make less work for yourself later.
- As you pack, look at your belongings with a critical eye. If you don't use something, think about donating it to charity or holding a garage sale; now is a good time to organize.
- Put together an overnight bag of “need it now” items and keep it close. This could include important papers, a first aid kit, toothbrushes, snacks and a coloring book and crayons to keep your child busy.
- Start collecting boxes and other packing materials as early as possible.
- You won't remember what's in that box; label everything clearly with both the contents and the room you want it to end up in.
- Contact utilities to inform them of your move before you arrive at your new residence.
- Research your new community, learn what they have to offer you and your family and get excited about your move!
