Moving Checklist
Don't put it off, you can start preparing for your move right away. Use our checklist to get started early.
As Soon As Possible
- Clean out closets and junk drawers. Make sure everything is organized and ready to pack.
- Have a garage sale or donate unwanted items to charity.
- Begin packing non-essential items.
- Research your new area. Find out about local schools, attractions and shopping areas.
- Start collecting moving quotes or arranging help.
- Start a file to keep track of all your quotes and important papers. Keep all receipts, some may be tax deductible.
- If possible begin preparing your new home for your arrival.
- Find a new doctor, dentist and vet.
Six weeks before
- Finalize your decision on a mover or rent a moving truck.
- Transfer all school records for your children.
- Get copies of your family's medical, dental, and vet records. Ask your current doctor for referrals.
- Plan to use up frozen foods and aerosol cleaning products.
- Call your insurance agent and inform them of the move. Arrange insurance for your new home.
- Make sure your friends and family have your new address.
One Month Before
- Change your address with the post office.
- Change your address with the IRS.
- Make travel arrangements for you and your pets.
- Transfer or cancel any memberships.
- Collect all important documents, including marriage certificates, passports, etc; in a fire-safe box.
- Arrange for pet transportation if necessary.
Two Weeks Before
- Forward your magazines and newspaper.
- Contact all of your utilities and change your service to your new address.
- Organize those helping you on the day of the move.
- If you are changing banks, open your new account and transfer all funds.
- Pack suitcases for use during the move.
- Pack boxes of essentials for the first night such as sheets, pots, pans and easy-to-cook food. Set them aside as “load last” boxes.
- If you are moving appliances, clean, empty and defrost everything a least 24 hours before moving day.
- Fill any prescriptions you will need for the next few weeks. Transfer prescriptions if necessary.
- Plan meals to use up as much of your pantry as possible.
On Moving Day
- Do a final walk through of your home to make sure you haven't left anything.
- Keep valuables and important papers close during the move.
- If you are changing banks, make sure you have travelers checks or other funds available.
- Supervise the loading of your goods make sure your “load last” items are the last on the truck.
